Papermaking For Children

Papermaking is a fascinating subject, and a great way to have fun. Using simple papermaking screens and a food liquidiser, everyone learns how to make their own sheets of handmade paper from recycled paper pulp. Children  learn how to form their paper, press it, and process it for drying. By adding different colours of recycled papers, as well as flowers, organic, and found materials,  every new piece of handmade paper that gets made is  it different from the one before. Sheets can then either be dried in a safe place in your venue, or sent home for drying. Finished pieces can then be used for writing, drawing, or painting on. Handmade paper can also be made into greeting cards, used for rubber stamp printing and there are even people who put them through their computer printers !

The timing of the workshop is variable, and tailored to suit the your own particular requirements. . The best time/pupil ratio for quality  results is 15 children for a 2 ½ hour workshop.  This workshop is suitable for children from the ages of  8 – 14 years. Children as young as five years can also have a go for a shorter period of time. Schools can likewise work out a special programme whereby shorter sessions can be run to include a higher number of children in a day, but then the quality of the results is balanced by the quantity of participants.

If you’ve ever wondered how paper was made, or what you can do with it once its done, then this is the course for you !

Aprons/workshirts are useful, but old clothes are essential. Children with sensitive skin should plan to wear close-fitting rubber gloves.
